True Value was founded by John Cotter in 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. Back then, he called his store Cotter & Company. There were originally 12 stores when the idea started out, and it grew even bigger when they bought assets from Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Company, which led to them getting hte True Value trademark.
