The history of Stop & Shop
The store that would become Stop & Shop was founded as Greenie Store, a small grocery shop opened by Solomon and Jeanie Rabinovitz in Boston. They opened their doors in 1892. In 1914, a second store called Economy Grocery Stores Company was opened by the same family in a nearby city.
Within three yeras, they were opening several stores every single year and had a lineup of 15 different locations by 1917. In 1959, they celebrated opening their 100th store. Today, there are over 400 Stop & Shop locations.
