Food Lion is a grocery store that has locations in the southeastern United States.

All about Food Lion

The thing that makes this grocery store interesting is that it is actually Belgian-American. Though it does not directly impact all of the products in their stores, there are definitely some unique finds! These supermarkets can be found in the Mid and South Atlantic states, as well as a few other states spread around the same area.

This relatively small chain began to compete with national grocery stores, as still does to some extent. Food Lion stores say that they are “neighborly and convenient” and feature “extra low prices” on both name brand and private label products. The stores’ costumers definitely agree! Becoming an MVP Customer and obtaining the card to prove it give the rewards of tons of savings. Add to those benefits with coupons and the weekly specials that vary according to location. The history of Food Lion

Food Lion was founded in North Carolina in 1957 by three men named Brown Kenter, Wilson Smith, and Ralph Kenter. It was originally named Food Town, though it changed the name to Food Lion in 1983. Belgian group The Delahize Group acquired it in 1974, though Food Lion's parent company didn't merge with it until 2015. Today, there are around 1,100 Food Lion locations spread out across 10 states.

Why is the supermarket called Food Lion?

Food Lion is definitely a fun name for supermarket, but if you've never heard it before, it might also sound a little strange! That's why we delved into the history of this supermarket chain to find out why it's called Food Lion.

The answer is the reason that lots of store end up having to change their names. When the supermarket first started out, it was called Food Town. It started expanding in the North Carolina area, and soon to other states, too.

But that's when they found out some bad news. There was a store in Virginia that was called Foodtown, and another chain in Maryland that was called Food Town and had 100 or so affiliated stores.

Our Food Town had to change their name. The Delhaize Group, which acquired the supermarkets, had a lion in their logo. Plus, if they changed the word from "Town" to "Lion", they would only have to buy two new letters and move the order around.
