Publix Super Markets are one of the top food retailers in the United States.
All about Publix
Publix is a chain of supermarkets in the United States - but it's certainly not your average grocery store. In addition to having all the departments a regular grocery store would have, some Publix stores have cafes, sushi bars, liquors, and pharmacies. Publix online has some really awesome and unique programs. For example, if you have a product in mind that is usually found in health stores but not in Publix, you can simply order it and it will be shipped to your local store. Also, there is a recipe and meal building program that’s definitely worth checking out.
You can also find some really good deals on the Publix website. If you click on their weekly ad or coupons, you can find the very best prices on their products. You can also check them out right here on Tiendeo, and the best part is you can start right here!
The history of Publix
Publix was started by George Jenkins in a modestly-sized building in 1930. In his fourth year of business, he made $120,000. Even though the Great Depression hit hard, Jenkins still managed to make his stores a success. He built the first supermarket in Florida.
In 1945, he bought a chain of food stores called All American and re-opened them as Publix stores. The stores slowly started expanding all over Florida, and in 1991 they opened their first non-Florida Publix in Georgia. Since then, it's just been onwards and upwards for Publix!
Publix: The world's largest company owned by its employees
Publix holds the title not only of being one of the biggest supermarket chains in the United States, but also the largest company in the world that's owned by its employees.
Its employees - who number around 180,000 - are collective shareholders. Once they put in 1,000 hours of work and have spent one year working for Publix, they get stock in Publix (the amount of stock is equal to 8.5% of their total pay).
A few more honors Publix holds, aside from being the biggest employe-owned company:
- One of Forbes' 100 Best Companies to Work For from 1998 to 2016
- Also one of Forbes' Most Admired Companies from 1994 to 2009
- The EPA's Environmental Merit Award in 2000
- Consumer Reports'#2 ranked Grocery Store
- Fortune's One of the 25 Most Important Private Companies
And there are lots more where that came from! It's also the most profitable grocery store in the United States.
