The history of Petco

Petco started out as a mail-order business for vets who needed to buy supplies in 1965. Today, they are the leading pet specialty retailer in the U.S. 

In 2000, the stores went private when they were acquired by TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners. In 2015, they were acquired once again by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and CVC Capital Partners. Petco and competitor PetSmart had been talking about a merger at the time, but it didn't end up going through.
