Lots of people know that H&M sells trendy clothes at low prices - but not as many people know that H&M is a Swedish company that stands for Hennes & Mauritz.

The history of H&M

The very first H&M store was opened in 1947 by Erling Persson, who wanted to sell fashionable clothing at prices that the everyday customer would be able to afford. The store's original name was "Hennes", which means "hers" in Swedish.

The M, which stands for "Mauritz", was added in 1968 when the store acquired Mauritz Widforss, a hunting apparel store. This also introduced a menswear line to the shop.

H&M opened its first store in the U.S. in 2000. Today, it has over 400 stores in the U.S. alone, which art part of the over 3,700 H&M locations across the world.

Every year, a highly recognized designer creates a special collection with affordable prices at H&M.

The first well-known designer to work with H&M on this campaign was Karl Lagerfeld in 2004. The collection was supposed to be a one-off event, but it was so successful that the company hired British designer Stella McCartney the following year.

In 2006, Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf took over the position, followed by Italian designer Roberto Cavalli’s 2007 collection.

In 2008, H&M chose Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, and in 2009 they worked with three famous designers at once: Matthew Williamson, Jimmy Choo, and Sonia Rykiel. Rykiel also participated in the 2010 collection alongside Lanvin. Versace took their turn in 2011.

Versace came back in 2012 and worked with Marni, Maison Martin Margiela, fashionista Anna Dello Russo, and former soccer star David Beckham. In 2015, Balmain launched a collection that turned out to be H&M’s most successful to date.
