The history of Stein Mart

Sam Stein founded Stein Mart in 1902 in Greenville, Mississippi. His son, Jake, ended up taking over the company when Sam passed away in 1932. The store's original focus had been very general and more like a traditional department store, but with Jake at the helm the focus was shifted to being on discounted clothing. Today, that's still the store's strong point, and there are Stein Mart locations in 29 different states.

Stein Mart went from one store to making billions in three generations

A lot of the biggest stores in the country started out with just one location originally. That's the story behind Stein Mart, which was originally just a single shop that sold general goods. It was opened by Sam Stein, a Russian immigrant who fled persecution for his Jewish religion and started out with $43 to his name.

Stein started his store, and it was a family business right from the start. When he passed away, his son Jake took over and helped expand the store into a chain that focused on discounted products. A lot of what they sold in their stores sold off merchandise from Saks Fifth Avenue.

Today, the store has involved a third generation: Jake's son Jay. The store now brings in $1.3 billion a year. Not bad for a little family run business!
