The history of Dollar General
Dollar General could have been known as J.L. Turner & Son, Inc. if the store had kept its original name from back in 1939! It was founded by a father and son duo, hence the name. The name wasnt changed to Dollar General Corporation until 1968.
The first store was opened in 1955 in Scottsville, Kentucky. Back then, more than the name was different. This was also actually a real dollar store and nothing cost more than a dollar.
Today, there are over 12,000 Dollar General locations across the United States and their revenue was upwards of $20 billion.
Dollar General has a strong connection to NASCAR
When you think of Dollar General, do you think of NASCAR? Well, there are almost certainly some car sports fans who do! The stores are the main sponsor for the Joe Gibbs racing team, and occasionally sponsor individual drivers as well. Theyve sponsored Matt Kenseth, Brian Vickers, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and more!
Dollar GEneral has also sponsored drivers at events like the Verizon IndyCar Series, the Honda Grand Prix, and the Peak Antifreeze & Motor Oil Indy 300.
Still, all good things must come to an end - and if youre a fan of NASCAR and Dollar General, we have some bad news. At the end of the 2016 NASCAR season, the stores will be withdrawing their sponsorship. The stores official statement read:
"Our strategy to reallocate our future marketing assets into new programs is strictly a business decision to align our priorties to better serve our customer."
