The history of Staples

The very first Staples opened on May 1, 1986 in Brighton, Massachusetts. Its two founders were actually former rivals when they worked in the supermarket business! The idea came about when one of them was frustrated at relying on small neighborhood stores for office supplies. 

In 1991, Staples expanded to Canada, followed by the U.K. the next year. In its 10th year of business, it made more than $3 billion, qualifying it to become a Fortune 500 company. 

Their slogan for many years was "Yeah, weve got that", but it was replaced in 2003 by "That was easy", its current slogan.

That’s what’s happening at some Staples stores. Parts of the store are being rented to offices, giving curious shoppers a reason to stop by Staples Office Supplies. 

They teamed up with Workbar, a startup that works in office sharing, renting spaces to their subscribers who need things like a conference room or some desks for employees.
