The very first Staples opened on May 1, 1986 in Brighton, Massachusetts. Its two founders were actually former rivals when they worked in the supermarket business! The idea came about when one of them was frustrated at relying on small neighborhood stores for office supplies.

Their slogan for many years was "Yeah, we've got that", but it was replaced in 2003 by "That was easy", its current slogan.
