The history of Fred Meyer
Fred Meyer was founded by...Fred Meyer! He opened a one-stop shopping center in Portland in 1931, and the store was a hit with shoppers because it let them pick up groceries, medications, home goods, gas, and more. He started expanding his line of stores and picked the new locations based on where highways were going to be built.
Today there are Fred Meyer locations in four different states, which still let shoppers do all kinds of shopping at a single location.
Fred Meyer is ahead of the curve on banning plastic bags
A few states are looking at measures to ban free plastic bags in stores, or have even already passed measures to do so. But Fred Meyer stores were actually ahead of the curve when it comes to plastic bags. In 2010, they made a big announcement.
On August 1, 2010, Fred Meyer stopped offering plastic bags at its stores in Portalnd, Oregon. The reason? The negative effects that plastic bags can have on the environment. This made Fred Meyer the biggest chain of stores in the metropolitan area to have banned the bags.
It wasn't until the following year, 2011, that the city of Portalnd decided to also ban plastic bags for supermarkets and big box stores.
So what happens if you go to the store but don't have any bags with you? Fred Meyer has reusable bags available for sale at the checkout stand. The store's spokesman says that more and more of their customers are choosing to use these bags.
