The history of Younkers
Younkers started out as a dry good business that was run by a family in Keokuk, Iowa. That was in 1856, and things have changed a lot since then! They are now present in 50 locations in the Midwest and have stores in 7 different states. Its parent company is currently The Bon-Ton, which owns a collection of fashion, cosmetics, and home furnishing brands.
A few things you may not have known about Younkers
Outside of the Midwest, many shoppers many not have heard of Younkers. Even for shoppers in the area, there are quite a few things about Younkers store that they might not kow!
For instance, did you know that in the original store the founders, Lipman, Marcus, and Samuel Younker, brought supplies there strapped to their backs from nearby farms?
They also founded the first synagogue in Iowa, and abided by the Jewish Sabbath, which is Saturday. That meant they didn't open their store on Saturdays.
The first female sales clerks in Des Moines were hired at Younkers in 1881.
Younkers' Des Moines location included a tea room that was a big hit with locals. Women liked to go to have lunch with their friends, and you could often spot local teens there on dates for dinner in the evenings.
