Williams Sonoma was founded in 1956 by a man named Chuck Wiliams, who lived in Sonoma, California. After a trip to France, he acquired a love for French kitchen supplies, which he thought people in the U.S. would probably like, too. So he came up with a plan to sell stuff like this is the United States. He was right - and his flagship location in San Francisco was a hit right away with famous names in American cuisine like James Beard and Julia Child.

Over the years, Williams Sonoma has become such a staple of American culture that it's started showing up in all kinds of pop culture situations.
