The history of Sunglass Hut
The first Sunglass Hut location actually wasn't a physical store - it was just a kiosk in the mall! It was opened by Sanfrod L. Ziff, an optometrist, and he opened it in 1971 in the Dadeland Mall in Miami, Florida. It was a hit, and he opened up more locations throughout the city.
Today, it's part of the largest eyewear brand in the world, the Luxottica Group, and has over 2,000 stores.
Ever wondered how sunglasses became a thing?
Today, everybody who's shopped at Sunglass Hut knows what a great pair of sunglasses can add to an outfit. They've also got tons of benefits for your eye health. But how did sunglasses get invented and popularized? Have you ever wondered?
You might be surprised to learn that the first people to come up with the idea where the Romans (today, Italians still make some of the most stylish sunglasses, so it's perhaps not so surprising!). That's when the Emperor Nero watched gladiator fights through an emerald to avoid squinting in the sunlight. But actual sunglasses were still another thousand years or so away: around 1280, to be exact.
Today's sunglass shape - with two lenses and legs that balance on your earlobes - were first seen in England in the 18th century. In the 20th century, they shot up in popularity when movie stars wore them in between takes in sunny Hollywood.
