The history of Spencer's
Max Spencer Adler founded Spencer Gifts in Pennsylvania in 1947. But it wasn't a physical store at first - it was a mail-order catalog business and sold novelty items and gifts.
Their first actual retail location didn't open until 1963, with a stoer in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The store is still around today! But their mail-orer business isn't; it actually closed down in 1990.
In 1967, Spencer Gifts merged with MCA, an American media company, and started going by just Spencer's. In the 1990s, they acquired DAPY and GLOW!, along with Halloween retailer Spirit Halloween.
Today, there are over 600 Spencer's locations in the United States and Canada. They also had stores in the United Kingdom for a brief period of time, though they shut down.
Spencer's controversial gift selection
Spencer's is known for having an edgy selection of merchandise, although it sometimes crosses the line from edgy into just offensive for some shoppers. They've been in hot water a few times for select pieces of merchandise.
In 1989, they got in trouble for selling Halloween masks called "Arafat" and "sheik" as part of a "Fright Stuff" selection - a move many shoppers thought only reinforced ideas that Arabic people are frightening. The masks were pulled, and although they were placed back in shops, the store's president said they wouldn't stock the masks again.
They've also drawn controversy for selling adult toys right next to regular merchandise, though products like this are supposed to be strictly off-limits to underage shoppers.
More recently, Irish heritage organizations have asked the stores to stop selling shirts that say things like "Irish girl wasted" and "F*** me, I'm Irish."
