The history of Sherwin-Williams
Sherwin-Williams was founded in 1866 by two men named Henry Sherwin and Edward Williams. The first one of the store was Sherwin-Williams Paints, which has over 4,000 stores today! They now sell both brand name paints as well as their own lines of paints. They also opened Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes, Sherwin-Williams Spray Source, and more.
Today, they have four different segments of their company, including Paint Stores Group, Latin America Coatings Group, Consumer Group, and Global Finishes Group. The most well-known brand, Sherwin-Williams Stores, is part of the Paint Stores Group.

Chess and paint may not seem like the most natural pairing, but Sherwin-Williams actually combined the two to create one of their most successful advertising campaigns ever!
This was done back in 1976 at the Homebuilder's Show in Dallas, Texas. The store got in touch with chess master John Jacobs. Jacobs was at the show with a chesseboard. Attendees could volunteer to challenge the master to a game of chess - if they dared.
Each brave volunteer would give the chance to play the chess master for a five minute game. It's not clear how many of them managed to win, but we bet not very many!
So how does paint tie into all of this? It was actually more than just an attention-grabbing way to get people to interact with their brand at a trade show. All the pieces had been painted with Sherwin-Williams paint.
