The history of Saks Fifth Avenue
Saks Fifth Avenue was founded in 1867 by Andrew Saks in New York, although at the time it was simply called Saks & Company. It merged with Gimbel Brothers Inc. when Saks passed away in 1912.
The first Saks Fifth Avenue location was opened in 1924 and it was just in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral and Rockefeller Center in New York City.
The store expanded over the years and became well known for its luxury goods. Today, there are stores in five countries in addition to the United States.
What you probably didn't know about Saks Fifth Avenue
While you probably know that Saks Fifth Avenue is an upscale retailer, you may not have known about these fun facts about the luxury department store!
For instance, did you know that Saks Fifth Avenue has its own zip code? This was part of a program the U.S. Postal Service was experimenting with to give business their own zip codes. Saks was actually the first store to get one, and it belonged to their shoe department in their flagship New York City store.
What was the code? 10022-SHOE - which is the first time that they had ever used letters in a zip code in the United States.
This was also the first time that just one floor inside a building got its own zip code. In this case, it was the eighth floor.
It's not a cheap zip code to live in either. The value of the just the store's building on Fifth Avenue is over $1 billion!
