The history of Red Robin
The restaurant that would later become Red Robin opened in 1940 and was called Sam's Tavern. It became known as Red Robin because its owner, Sam, loved singing barbershop music, especially the song "When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along."
The restaurant was bought by a restaurant enterpreneur, who quickly expanded it. Today, there are over 530 Red Robin locations all across the United States. To find the nearest one near you, go to their website, redrobin.com, and use the store locator.
A few things about Red Robin that have changed over the years
As we just mentioned, Red Robin was originally named Sam's Tavern, then it became Sam's Red Robin, and finally it ended up as just Red Robin. But that's not the only thing that's changed over the years about this restaurant!
When it started out, it was popular for being a student bar because it was close to the University of Washington. Today, there are Red Robin locations all over the place.
They actually didn't originally sell hamburgers, either! Even though that's what the restaurant is best known for today, the original menu was all bar snacks rather than proper meals. When burgers were added, they were definitely popular with customers - and still are today!
And the original Red Robin location no longer exists. It was located at the corner of Furhman and Eastlake Avenues in Seattle, but was closed down in 2010. In 2014, the building was demolished.
