The history of Panera
Panera was originally started as the St. Louis Bread Company in 1987 by Ken Rosenthal. In 1993, his store was bought by Au Bon Pain, who then changed the company name to Panera Bread. The chain expanded across the U.S. rapidly, and Au Bon Pain sold its other brands off.
Today, there are around 2,000 Panera locations across the United States and Canada, and they're one of the most popular fast casual restaurants.
Panera gives some "dough" back to the community
Panera Bread has a charity program that helps give back to communities in need. It's called the "Day-End Dough-Nation" program, and they work with local charities that help to relieve hunger and give them the bread and other baked goods they have left over at the end of the day. Some charities pick up donations once a week, others once a day.
This caring gesture is estimated to have a retail value of $100 million per year. Rather than throwing away the unsold food, it makes much more sense to give it to a good cause. This also helps Panera, too, as it ensures customers that the baked goods they sell really have been freshly baked that day.
The help Panera gives communities goes beyond that, too. If a non-profit is having an event, Panera often donates a gift certificate or an amount of food fresh from its bakeries.
