The history of PacSun
Founded in 1980 by Tom Moore and Jack Hopkins, the idea behind PacSun was to bring "The beach to the people". Their first store was located in Las Vegas, which is definitely nowhere near the beach! Today, though, there are locations much closer to the beach, as there are around 700 PacSun locations nationwide.
They sell items from popular surf brands, as well as produce their own lines of apparel and accessories.
PacSun's controversial advertising campaign proves a big hit
PacSun made a big splash with their first ever national television advertising campaign. It was titled "Dress Irresponsibly." The idea behind the campaign was to get famous athletes to wear their clothes, and they got a huge range of people to participate, including Bucky Lasek, Leo Romero, Kelia Moniz, Rob Machado, Chris Pfanner, and Ryan Dungey. This also helped them make their brand known as a place for guys to shop as well as girls.
The commercials also went along with a style challenge on Facebook that fans could win. They had to post pictures of themselves in their most fashionable outfit, and the person who won would get a styling position at Nylon magazine. Not a bad prize at all!
They solidified their image as a cool place to get clothes with a collection the next year by reality TV stars Kendall and Kylie Jenner.
