The history of OfficeMax
Bob Hurwitz and Michael Feuer founded OfficeMax in 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio. The original location was open as recently as 2015! The store made its first big growth move when it acquired Office World, then five Highland Superstores locations, then OW OFfice Warehouse, then BizMart!
Still, history has a way of repeating itself, and in recent years OfficeMax has found itself on the other side of the buying and selling business. In 2003, Boise Cascade Office Products Corporation acquired OfficeMax and rebranded all their stores with the OfficeMax name.
Not too long aftewards, OfficeMax and Office Depot merged and became the biggest office supply store chain in the U.S.
OfficeMax makes a promise to decrease its environmental impact
It's not easy being green - as lots of stores and businesses that want to become more environmentally friendly quickly find out. OfficeMax has put in a lot of hard work into becoming a truly eco-friendly business. In fact, they were ranked by Newsweek as the "Greenest Large Retailer in America".
Thy've also received the ENERGY STAR Leader recongnition from the EPA for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, as well as a silver LEED certificate for Commerical Interiors for their distribution center, and a Climate Leadership Goal Achivement Award for Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Managment (also from the EPA).
Their approach to being more environmentally friendly is centered around three key themes: transportation, energy management, and product stewardship. They promised to buy, be, and sell greener, and judging by the amount of environmental awards they've won, we'd have to say they've done a pretty good job of it!
