The history of Neiman Marcus
The first Neiman Marcus store was opened on September 10, 1907 in Dallas, Texas. They immediately stood out from the other shops in the area because they offered clothing of an unsually high quality for the area. They also had a lavish decor that gave off an air of luxury right from the start, and they sold out their stock within just a few weeks.
Gradually, the store expanded, both in terms of number of stores and the types of products it offered, such as including menswear in 1929.
Neiman-Marcus was one of the most technologically innovative stores in the 1960s
Neiman-Marcus's whole brand is about being luxurious and different, and they firmly comitted to that brand in 1961 during the holiday season. They were one of just two stores in the United States that helped their shoppers find the perfect Christmas gifts....using computer-based assistance! Back in 1961, that was a really big deal.
How did it work? Shoppers gave the store information about the recipient. Neiman-Marcus's computers then compared that information to a list of their 2,200 items they had available. Then, the shopper got a list of the top 10 best suggestions.
Just for fun, one of the computer testers pretended he was President Kennedy trying to choose an expensive Christmas present for his wife. Neiman-Marcus's computer's suggestion? A yacht!
In 1968, Neiman-Marcus had another curious connection with technology. Astronaut Jim Lovell was flying in space on the Apollo 8 mission. He arranged to have a mink coat delivered to his wife in a Rolls Royce by one of hte store's drivers. Inside, it had a card that said "To Marilyn, from the Man in the Moon." Aww!
