The history of Lululemon
Chip Wilson founded Lululemon in 1998 as an athletic apparel store, and started selling yoga wear in the stores a few years later in 2001. Their first shop opened on Kitsilano, a trendy neighborhood, in Vancouver, Canada, and the idea was to be a clothing design store by day and a yoga studio by night. It quickly expanded to the U.S. In 2014, they also opened their first store in Europe, which was in London's Covent Garden.
Today, they have 354 stores around the globe, in North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia. In the U.S. alone, Lululemon's revenue in 2015 was around $1.7 billion. They employ nearly 3,000 people.
Lululemon tries to get communities involved in yoga
Lululemon has the social impact program "Here to Be" which focuses on getting communities engaged through yoga and meditation. Their statement on their website says "We believe that everyone has the right to be happy and experience the joy that comes from living into our highest, truest selves."
The communities they help with their yoga and meditation programs include school programs to help children focus better on sessions with people recovering from long illnesses or injuries, as well as communities struggling with conflict. They also run a special series of sessions called LoveYourBrain that helps people recover from traumatic brain injuries.
How do they do it? They work with nonprofit organizations to put on the classes, as part of a yoga service community. They help the organizations work with their global network of stores and customers that stretches across the planet and share resources and tips as a group.
