The history of Lord & Taylor
Lord & Taylor was founded by Samuel Lord and George Washington Taylor in 1826. Their first store opened in Manhattan, and sold misses' apparel, cashmere shawls, and hoisery. Later, it became the first store on the now-iconic Fifth Avenue and the first store that decided opening a suburban location was worth its time.
They've always mixed together classic style and contemporary tastes, and that hasn't changed today, even though they have 50 locations all over the United States.
Lord & Taylor had the first female head of a major retail store
Although you might expect a nearly 200 year old store to be quite traditional, especially one that sells luxury goods, it turns out that Lord & Taylor had a pretty groundbreaking moment of its own. In 1945, they chose a woman to become the president of Lord & Taylor, which was unheard of back then.
This woman was Dorothy Shaver, and she was the first woman who was in charge of a multimillion dollar firm. She made some pioneering moves of her own, including opening a brand store, rather than a boutique style shop, in a suburb. This became the done thing for stores expanding into suburban areas (they still do it today, actually).
Her salary was $110,000, which was the highest salary that an American woman had ever earned back then (though it's worth nothing that her male counterparts earned up to four times as much).
