LOFT, which is also sometimes written as Ann Taylor LOFT or just Loft, is a store aimed at professional women who have some money to spend on clothes, though it's not priced as high as its parent brand. It's an extension of Ann Taylor and more affordable and relaxed. The original concept was to be a more casual sister brand, but over the years LOFT has developed its own personality and style.

The history of LOFT

Ann Inc. was started in 1954 with a single store called Ann Taylor opened by Richard Liebeskind. LOFT was added to their lineup in 1998, with the idea of creating clothing that was modern, feminine, and versatile all at the same time for women who wanted stylish everyday clothing that would be easy to wear. 

Today, there are over 650 LOFT locations, and they have stores in the United States in 46 different states, plus Canada and Mexico. 

LOFT actually outsells big sister brand Ann Taylor!

Although LOFT is around as a little sister brand to Ann Taylor, the company actually manages to outsell its older sibling. A story by Racked lookinto the issue. 

While Ann Taylor brought in about $233 million in quarterly sales, LOFT hauled in over $361 million in the same quarter! 

Curiously, LOFT managed to make it big at a time when similar stores with casual clothing in a similar price range were struggling. It's also not as well-established or long-running as Ann Taylor. 

So what made it a success? LOFT president Gary Muto says it's all about being "approachable fashion...that works everywhere, in urban areas, suburban areas, small markets, midmarkets, lifestyle centers." 

Take the broad appeal and add in the relatively inexpensive pricing, it makes sense why LOFT has been a big hit with women all over the United States.
