The history of Levi's
Levi's was founded by Levi Strauss in San Francisco in 1873 alongisde Jacob Davis, a tailor. Davis had wanted to buy a patent for the way he sewed jeans, but he didn't have the money. He'd been buying his fabric made from Strauss's warehouse, so the two decided to go into business together. That's how some of the most famous jeans in the world were born!
Who's worn Levi's over the years?
Levi's started out with fairly humble beginnings, although today it's one of the best-selling and most recognizable clothing brands on the entire planet.
The first people to discover Levi's jeans were the people who worked in the west of the United States, including railroad workers, cowboys, and lumberjacks. People who came from the East Coast to visit saw the jeans with rivets and started spreading the word about them back home.
During World War II, the jeans got a big boost. They were determined to be essential, and only people who were doing defense work could buy them.
By the 1950s, they had started becoming part of different youth trends, including the greasers, the rockers, the hippies, and the mods over the decades.
Even people like Albert Einstein have worn Levi's over the years! He had a leather jacket made by the company that sold for over $100,000 at auction.
