The history of Lane Bryant

Lane Bryant was started by a woman called Lena Bryant - and actually, that's what the store should have been called, except when she sent in her application to open a bank account the banker misspelled her name! She was widowed at a young age and left as a single mother of a young son. She decided to make her way as a dressmaker, and in 1904 opened her first store. She actually lived in the back of the store.

She created the first maternity dress that was commercially produced, when one of her customers who was pregnant asked if she could create something to wear that was "presentable but comfortable." Lena's idea was a hit, and soon her store became better and better known.

Lane Bryant hit back against the Victoria's Secret advertisements

Lane Bryant is a popular place to buy plus sized clothing, and their brand sends out a lot of messages about being comfortable in your own skin and accepting of different body types. They created an advertising campaign to hit back against the body image standards portrayed by Victoria's Secret, in particular the Victoria's Secret Angels models, who are all very slim.

The campaign Lane Bryant came up with was#ImNoAngel, and a series of advertisements were released that featured popular plus size models, including Ashley Graham, Candice Huffine, Marquita Pring, and much more. The models had a range of body types and appearances, and they all wore lingerie from Lane Bryant's lingerie line Cacique. They all talked about what made them feel sexy in the commerical.

The ads were a hit with Lane Bryant's users, who shared their own images using the hashtag#ImNoAngel on social media sites.
