The history of Kate Spade
Kate Spade was founded by...Kate Spade! She and her husband Andrew made it their mission to fight against the "nothing black bag" that they saw all the women on the streets of New York City carrying. They designed more colorful and original bags to stand out that mixed classic design with a few trendy new features.
The bags quickly became iconic, and within five years it was worth $70 million! Today, it belongs to Liz Claiborne, Inc.
Kate Spade started out from the other side of the fashion industry
Lots of people dream of making it big as a fashion designer someday - but Kate Spade actually wanted to be a fashion journalist originally, and that's what she did for many years before starting the fashion line that would make her famous. She started her career as the style editor at Mademoiselle magazine right after she graduated from college, where she had majored in journalism.
Spade worked at Mademoiselle from 1986 until 1991, and when she left she had the impressive title of senior editor and head of accessories.
The reason she left? She wanted to launch her line of handbags! She went into business with her husband Andrew Spade, and it turned out to be a very good decision. The brand ended up making her name world famous and is worth millions of dollars.
