The history of Joe's Crab Shack
The very first Joe's Crab Shack location was opened in 1991 in Houston, Texas. It was quickly purchased by restaurant group Landry's Restaurants, Inc., who made it into a chain. Today, it's owned by the Ignite Restaurant Group and there are approximately 140 Joe's Crab Shack locations across the United States.
Joe's Crab Shack experiments with no tipping
Tipping is pretty much a normal thing all across the United States, but there are a growing number of restaurants that are embracing the "no tipping" trend. Among those restaurants is Joe's Crab Shack.
The policy was adopted at 18 of their locations in the summer of 2015, and the restaurants are considering expanding the idea to all of their restaurants. The management put up lots of signs to let their patrons know that tipping was no longer required. They also took the tip section off of the bills.
The reason? The CEO of the Ignite Restaurant Group, which owns Joe's, explained "We believe that consistently great service should always be included in the menu price, so we are taking the responsibliity of paying the service staff."
That means that servers at the test locations got higher wages, and the prices on the menu increased about 12-15%.
