The history of G-Star Raw
G-Star Raw was founded in 1989 in Amseterdam by Jos van Tilburg. The original name was going to be Gap Star, but they wanted to avoid confusing with Gap, especially as they also do lots of denim.
G-Star Raw gives back with musician Pharrell Williams
Pharrell Williams is all over the radio and TV with his catchy music - but did you know he's also made a foray into the fashion world? He teamed up with G-Star Raw in 2014 for a very special collaboration and project!
The project was called "RAW for the Oceans", and involved Pharrell, G-Star Raw, and the textile company Bionic Yarn. The resulting clothing collection was made out of a rather unusual material - recycled plastic that had been recovered from the ocean after people had thrown it away there. Bionic Yarn, which Pharrell is the creative director of, created yarn out of the material.
The cutting-edge project was a perfect match for G-Star Raw, which is a company well known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to all things fashion, explained Pharrell.
The video explaining the project was set to none other than Pharrell's hit song "Happy".
