The origins of Forever 21
Forever 21 was founded in 1984 in Los Angeles by a South Korean couple. Today, there are 723 stores in 49 countries. The company employs more than 30,000 people across the world.
With over 600 Forever 21 locations internationally, it won’t be hard to find one near by. They have stores in North and South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. With the exception of the stores in the Middle East, where stores are 50% joint venture, all those hundreds of stores are entirely company owned. After the U.S., Canada has the most stores.
The first Forever 21 store was just 900 square feet big. Now, the average store size is 38,000 square feet.
Don Won Chang and Jin Sook, the founders of Forever 21, created their own version of the American Dream.
In 1981, Don Won Chang and his wife Jin Sook left their native South Korea to try their luck in the United States.
Don had to work two jobs at once to make it to the end of the month. One day, as he told the Los Angeles Times in 2010, he “noticed the people who drove the nicest cars were all in the garment business.”
In 1984, the couple opened their first store, called Fashion 21. They were so successful that they widened their audience and changed the name to Forever 21.
Today, Forever 21 is still a family business. Don is the CEO, Jin is the Chief Merchandising Officer, and their two daughters work in marketing and visuals. There’s even one in Myung-Dong, the neighborhood where Don grew up in South Korea.
