The history of Famous Footwear
It all started with just one store that was opened in 1960 and called Neil's Shoes, which not too soon afterwards became Neil's Factory Shoe Outlet. It was one of the very first discount retailers in the United States. At the time, everything else was either a small mom and pop joint or a pricey department store, so it really stood out.
The line expanded rapidly, and was renamed Famous Footwear in 1964 when Neil opened a second location. By the end of the decade, their annual revenue was nearly $1 million and there were eight stores. Today, there are over 1,100 Famous Footwear locations.
Famous Footwear helps support local charities with a special walk
Every year, Famous Footwear does a big part to help give back to their communities. They participate in the March of Dimes, a nonprofit that focuses on mother and baby help, especially to prevent issues like premature birth, birth defects, and infant mortality.
At Famous Footwear locations, you'll see campaigns in their stores that raise awareness - and hopefully money - for the cause. They help to promote the walks that March of Dimes does in towns and cities across the United States.
They started working together in 2001, and have raised $18 million for the foundation. The chief marketing office explained why participating was so important for them:
"We want to make it easy for our associates and customers to get in step with the March for Babies® cause. Through our sponsorship, we hope to celebrate victories large and small with the families who benefit from this amazing organization."
