David Yurman was already well known in the jewelry business by the time he founded his own store in 1980. He'd been working since age 16 with different artists and sculptors that taught him everything he needed to know. He was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of American in 1999. Today, there are 32 David Yurman locations in North America and beyond, and they are headquartered in New York City.

He was born on OCtober 12, 1942. Sybil Kleinrock, who would become his wife and partner, was born two months later and just a few miles away.
His passion for art started when he saw a book of prehistoric cave paintings at age 11 at his local library in 1953.
He learned the welding techniques he still uses in his jewelry line today when he was a junior in high school. He learned from the artist Roger Rileau in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
He was also inspired by the beatnik generation, and hitchhiked all the way to Big Sur, California. After that, he moved to New York's Greenwich Village and began an apprenticeship under sculptor Jacques Lipchitz.
