The history of Cost Plus World Market
The very first Cost Plus World Market was opened in 1958 in San Francisco, California, on the famous Fisherman's Whaft. The founder was Wiliam Amthor, who found that there was a niche in the market for selling imported merchandise at low prices. He started selling rattan furniture, and it was a huge success. This convinced him to go for it, and he started importing wicker furniture in shiploads later that same year.
The idea quickly spread. Today, there are 276 Cost Plus locations in 35 different U.S. states.
Cost Plus gets it goods from all over the world - and sends their buyers there!
The concept behind Cost Plus is that it offers beautiful and unusual products from all over the world - and that's exactly what they send their buyers to find! They have a team of buyers whose job it is to travel to lots of different places to find great stuff to sell. Not a bad job, right?
Their official website says they send their buyers to "remote villages, centuries-old factories and foreign bazaars", and they come back bearing treasures like "baskets from Bali, chocolates from Belgium, pottery from Portugal, and wine from around the world."
But luckily, you don't have to travel far to find these goods - you can just pick them up at a Cost Plus location near you! With nearly 300 stores, the chances are good that you can find one not too far away. Or, at the very least, you can order online.
