The history of MC Sports
MC Sports was founded in 1946 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as Michigan Clothiers and sold men's clothing. The stores stood out at the time, as men's clothing had previously been sold with surplus military items. They switched to focus on sports apparel a few years later. Today, they operate 75 locations in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
MC Sports helps the nonprofit organization Backwater Legacies, which promotes the education of young people who hunt.
Sporting chain MC Sports has supported the Backwater Legacies nonprofit ever since it started. The nonprofit supports educating and training young people interested in hunting.
Backwater Legacies explain they are “dedicated to the conservation and preservation of our hunting heritage through youth activities, events, training, and education.” They run an annual youth hunting academy, where young campers learn about safety and how to shoot properly. They also have clinics, sponsored youth hunts, and hunting skills courses.
On MC Sports’ YouTube channel, you can see a video that explains how their partnership came to be. At Backwater Legacies’ very first youth clinic in 2006, the sporting goods store helped them out by providing gifts for the campers. The collaboration continues today, and recently raised for the nonprofit $1,500 to buy supplies. Backwater Legacies currently has over 250 active cadets.
