Among the standouts are an efficient “One Night Stand Sleeper Sofa;” a foldable-steel “Real Good” counter stool; the seemingly gravity-defying “Desk 51,” with a writing surface jutting far past the legs; stackable solid wood “Timber Chairs;” and a modular shelving system of powder-coated steel that doesn’t require hardware.
THEIR HISTORY
Blu Dot was founded in 1997 by 3 college friends who, to this day, design everything they make in their studio in Minneapolis. Today the designers John Christakos, Charles Lazor, and Maurice Blanks create modern furniture and lighting products that are useful, affordable, and desirable with a design process that relies heavily on teamwork and collaboration. The first collection included 18 pieces, ranging from a magazine rack to a modular shelving unit called the Chicago 8 Box, which remains in production today. Blu Dot works with craftspeople from around the world to bring designs to life, like a small, family-owned factory in northern Italy that specializes in metalworking tasked to manufacture the Hot Mesh collection.
With only few store locations; San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, Minneapolis and SoHo, it might be hard to road test Blu Dot's sofas in an area near you, but that shouldn't prevent you from partaking in their gorgeous furnishings.
