The history of Billabong
Billabong was founded in 1973 in Gold Coast, Australia, by Gordon and Rena Merchant. Gordon had started out by making board shorts at his house, which he was selling to surf shops in the area. Surfers loved his signature triple-stitch that made the shorts super durable, and hte trend took off. By the 1980s, they were a well known brand and started expanding to other countries.
A few fun facts you (probably) didn't know about Billabong
Billabong is well known as a cool brand for surfers and surf fans alike to wear, but we've rounded up some fun facts that you probably didn't know about this store! Are you ready to find out some new stuff?
The name "Billabong" comes from the word "bilabarj", a word in the Wiradjuri language of group of people in Australia. The meaning is "a creek that runs only during the rainys eason."
They own the eyewear brand Von Zipper, so you can find some cool frames at their stores. They also added skateboarding apparel when they acquired Element in 2001.
Billabong sponsors lots of different teams of riders to show off their gear. The riders come from different subcultures, so their clothing and items reach a pinpointed audience of the riders' fans. They used to have a skateboarding team, though this is no longer listed on their website.
