The history of Barneys
Barneys was first opened by a man named Barney Pressman in 1923 in Manhattan. He originally sold brand name suits at discounted prices. Eventually, Barney's son Fred joined and they decided to focus on high-end merchandise rather than discount products. They started bringing in designer names and brands, and that's what the department store is known for today. There are 26 Barneys locations in the United States.
A few things you probably didn't know about Barneys
Barneys is quite a famous department store in the United States for its offerings of luxury goods. But there are still quite a few things you may not know about shopping at Barneys. Are you ready to find out some fun facts? Let's go!
To open up the first Barneys location, founder Barney Pressman had to pawn his wife's engagement ring! They gave him $500, which he put towards leasing a space in Manhattan (on Seventh and West 17th, to be precise).
The first slogan for the store was "No Bunk, No Junk, No Imitations." It also gave its customers free parking plus free alterations to get them in.
The store used to be called Barney's, with an apostrophe, but it was dropped in 1981. Today, it's just Barneys.
The first store they opened outside of Manhattan was in Chicago. That was in 1993. The following year, they opened up a location in Beverly Hills, California.
