The history of Avis
It all started out with just three cars at a small airport! That was back in 1948, and it was opened by Warren Avis at the Willow Run Airport in Michigan. Over the next few years, it started opening up more and more branches. By 1953, Avis had grown so much that it was the second biggest car rental company in the United States. When its tenth anniversary rolled around, they had international offices in Canada and Mexico, as well as in Europe.
The company is currently owned by the Avis Budget Group.

The name means can be translated a few different ways, including "bird", "strength", or "desire." It comes from the older Germanic name Aveza, and showed up in the English language after the Normans brought it to England, where it changed to Avis. In the Middle Ages, it was a popular pick for names for baby girls.
