The history of Abercrombie and Fitch
David T. Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch founded Abercrombie and Fitch in 1892 in New York. However, back then it sold outdoors goods, like shotguns, tents, and fishing supplies. This store went bankrupt, and the name was brought back with another shop that was sold to The Limited. Today, there are over 1,049 Abercrombie and Fitch locations worldwide. They are headquartered in Ohio.
Why Abercrombie and Fitch pulled back on the sexy ads
Abercrombie and Fitch got a lot of attention from teens and parents alike with their highly sexualized ads that they put out to promote their clothes - although their models were often hardly wearing any clothes in the photos!
They had famous black and white bags with pictures of scantily clad models, and they also put out catalogs that scandalized parents and delighted teens. When a new store opened, they would bring in a group of shirtless models. Inside the stores, the walls were covered in photos of more nearly bare models.
Today, this isn't the case. Why?
It's not because of outrage from parents or the public; rather, it's because they started facing some strong competition from fast fashion retailers! So, to keep up with the changes, they toned down the sexiness. They also gave their employees a less restrictive dress code, and aim to promote diversity and inviduality.
