The history of 7-Eleven
It all started with a man named John Jefferson Green, who started out by selling eggs, milk, and bread from ice house storefronts in locations for the Southland Ice Company. Green eventually bought the company, turned it into a corporation, and started a chain of convenience stores. They were originally called Tote'm Stores, but in 1946 became 7-Eleven to refer to their opening hours. Today, there are over 56,600 7-Eleven stores.
The Simpsons pays homage to 7-Eleven
The Simpsons is well known for making reference to lots of things that are popular in the United States, sometimes just as a jokey reference and sometimes as a pointed piece of commentary. If you've ever watched an episode of the show, you'll know that 7-Eleven gets its own reference.
That's via the stores called Kwik-E-Mart, which plays on the stereotypes of American convenience stores. The one in the Simpsons' hometown of Springfield is run by Apu. Their stores sell a big, sugary drink called a Squishee (rather than a Slurpee).
Fiction met reality when The Simpsons Movie was released in 2007. There were 11 7-Eleven stores in the U.S. that got a little makeover. They were turned into Kwik-E-Mart lcoations to promote the movie! their customers could also participate in a contest to become a character in The Simpsons.
The same year, Universal Studios added gift shops based on the Kwik-E-Mart to their theme parks near The Simpson Ride.
