The history of Newegg
Newegg was founded in 2001 by Fred Chang, who immigrated to the United States from Taiwan. Chang was the online store's CEO and chariman until 2008. He came back in 2010 when his replacement, Tally Liu, stepped down.
By 2005, Newegg was already making a big splash in the world of online shopping. Internet Retailer Magazine called it one of the Top 10 Internet Retailers, and it grew 30% that same year.
There are Newegg sites for customers in the United States, Canada, China, and Taiwan, as well as a special business site for companies' needs.
What does Newegg mean, anyway?
Newegg is a bit of a strange name for a technology company, as eggs don't generally have much to do with new computers! But that's the name Fred Chang chose for his online store when he founded it in 2001, and he actually had a very good reason for picking the name.
The egg is a symbol of new life and birth, as well as limitless potential. Adding "new" to the begining of it further emphasies these qualities. It was chosen to represent a new era of renewed hope for online stores, as when the website was founded a lot of e-commerce websites were having a tough time making their businesses work.
Curiously, there was a similarly named company around at the same time: Egghead Software. Though the name sounds like it might be associated, there is no link between the two companies.
