The history of Subway
Subway started out in 1965 when a man named Fred DeLuca borrowed a thousand dollars from his friend Pete to start a restaurant. As a gesture of thanks, he called it "Pete's Super Submarines." The next year, the two created a corporation as the restaurant expanded. In 1968, they renamed the sandwich shop Subway.
By 1984, Subway had expanded so much that they opened their first overseas restaurant in Bahrain. In 2007, it was consistently making it onto the Top 500 Franchises list published by Enterpreneur magazine, and in 2010 it officially became the largest fast food chain in the world.
Today, there are nearly 45,000 Subway locations in 112 different countries.
Subway holds a Guinness World Record...but it's not for the biggest sandwich!
Spanish company Nocilla (which makes chocolate spread) holds the world record for the longest sandwich in the world, which was an astonishing 12,680 feet long! But Subway is holding its own with a different type of record - the biggest number of people making sandwiches simultaneously.
They managed to get 1,481 people from all over the world making their classic subs at the same time, with lots of different kinds of bread, meat, veggies, cheese, and sauce.
The successful world record attempt was held at one of their restaurants in Las Vegas for its 50th annivesary.
Maybe next time they can try beating the record for the msot sandwiches made in an hour (26,710).
