Ghirardelli was founded in 1852 in San Francisco, California by Domenico Ghirardelli, an Italian chocolatier. The store has been opearting every since and providing all kinds of chocolate products to happy customers. Their parent company is Lindt & Sprüngli, a Swiss confectioner, since 1998.

Domenico Ghirardelli moved from his native Italy to California when he heard the news about the Gold Rush. He'd previously had his own confectionary shop in Peru, and used his knowledge to sell confectionary to other gold rush miners.
