Ghirardelli was founded in 1852 in San Francisco, California by Domenico Ghirardelli, an Italian chocolatier. The store has been opearting every since and providing all kinds of chocolate products to happy customers. Their parent company is Lindt & Sprüngli, a Swiss confectioner, since 1998.

They control all the elements of the chocolate manufacturing process, and say they're one of the only companies in the U.S. to do this. Their standards are so high that they reject as much as 40% of the cocoa seeds they get shipped!
The original plan was for the store to sell coffee and spices, along with chocolate. At some ponit, they also sold liquor and mustard. By 1900, they only sold chocolate and mustard.
Domenico Ghirardelli moved from his native Italy to California when he heard the news about the Gold Rush. He'd previously had his own confectionary shop in Peru, and used his knowledge to sell confectionary to other gold rush miners.
