The history of Discount Tire

The first Discount Tire was opened by Bruce T. Halle in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1960. From the sound of things at the beginning, you might have been surprised that Halle's company made it big. He'd tried his hand at a few other businesses with no luck, and he admits that when he started Discount Tire he didn't even have a business plan. He went four days without making a single sale.

Still, things went really well, and by 1990 there were more than 200 Discount Tire stores. Today, there are over 900 and business is brisk. Not bad for not having a plan!

Discount Tire's ads have a Guiness World Record

One of Discount Tire's commercials has the honor of holding a Guinness World Record! Their commerical titled "Thank You" is officially the TV commerical that's been running continuosly for the longest amount of time, as deemed by the Guinness World Book of Records in 2005.

The ad started airing in 1975, and it features a little old lady who flings a tire through the window of a Discount Tire storefront. The voiceover then says, "if ever you're not satisfied with one of our tires, please feel free to bring it back."

It's so popular that it's been run every year since then in different parts of the United States. It was produced by Swartout Productions, a production company based in Scottsdale, Arizona. The commerical also won the 1976 certificate for the Hollywood Radio and Television Society's World's Best Broadcast Advertisements.

Not bad for a little old lady!
