The history of Backcountry
Backcountry was founded by two friends in 1996, John Breese and Jim Holland. They invested $2,000 in the project and started out selling avalanche gear online. The operation was originally out of their garage. It grew surprisingly quickly, and started competing with big brands in its niche like REI. They recently acquired a German outdoor retailer called Bergfreude. Backcountry employs over 1,200 people and is headquartered in Utah.
Backcountry has a "Gearheads" program for people who love gear
Backcountry has a great reputation for being one of the very best places to buy specialist gear for all of their outdoor activities. A lot of the stuff they sell is really specific to each activity, so if you're a serious, say, snowboarder, you might have never even heard of a lot of it.
So, how do they sell such specific stuff? They get the help from a team of people they call their Gearhead Operations!
These are people they hire who are totally obsessed with their outdoor hobby, be it fly fishing, cycling, rock climbing, skiiing - whathever it is. Their Gearhands are sort of like customer service reps, but at a really high level.
They've all got really in-depth knowledge of all the gear sold, so they can help customers make the right purchase. After all, they've been there and done that themselves, and are happy to share their knowledge!
