The history of Backcountry
Backcountry was founded by two friends in 1996, John Breese and Jim Holland. They invested $2,000 in the project and started out selling avalanche gear online. The operation was originally out of their garage. It grew surprisingly quickly, and started competing with big brands in its niche like REI. They recently acquired a German outdoor retailer called Bergfreude. Backcountry employs over 1,200 people and is headquartered in Utah.
