The history of 6 pm
6 pm was a stand alone retailer until 2007, when it was acquired by Zappos.com, the website that's popular for its bargins on shoes, although it also has apparel and accessories. 6 pm is a bit different from Zappos, as its focus is on selling deeply discounted items. This means you can often find lower prices on 6 pm shoes, clothes, and accessories than you can at other retailers.
Today, 6 pm is a sister store of Zappos. They may have similar items, but their approachs to retail are still different.
That one time 6 pm offered a really, really good deal - by accident!
You know when they say something is just too good to be true? We're sure that's what lots of shoppers thought if they logged on to 6 pm in May 2010.
6 pm had a bit of an "oops" moment on day that year, when they priced all their items $49.95 by accident! This made for some very expensive socks, but some very, very inexpensive GPSs.
Zappos released a statement about the mistake, saying:
"6pm.com is where brandaholics go for their guilt free daily fix of the brands they crave. Every day, the site highlights discounts on products ranging up to 70% off. Well, this morning, we made a big mistake in our pricing engine that capped everything on the site at $49.95. The mistake started at midnight and went until around 6:00am PST."
They added, "While we’re sure this was a great deal for customers, it was inadvertent, and we took a big loss (over $1.6 million - ouch)".
Still, they honored the prices anyway, and thanked their customers for shopping with them.
