The history of Blair
John L. Blair founded Blair in 1910, though at the time it just sold raincoats. Now, it's one of the top catalog retailers in the United States.
John L. Blair's clever invention meant success for his brand
When John L. Blair started Blair in 1910, he focused just one product: raincoats. But no matter how he tried to sell the coats, he wasn't having much success. That's when he talked to an undertaker who helped give him a great idea.
The undertaker asked Blair if he had any nice black raincoats for sale; he didn't. That's when he thought - what if he used rubber vulcanization to attach black wool fabric to the outside of a raincoat? He started making the coats with a classmate, and they lined them with plaid Scottish fabric.
The coats sold out almost immediately, and Blair had to apologize to hopeful customers and tell them they had to wait a bit for so many to be produced. His product was quickly a hit across the country.
Today, the brand has expanded to being a general catalog retailer.
