The history of Applebee's
Bill and T.J. Palmer opened a restaurant called "T.J. Applebee's RX for Edibles & Elixirs" in 1980. They opened a second restaurant in 1983 and then sold the company. W.R. Grace and Company took over, and the restaurants started expanding.
In 1986, they changed the name and it became Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar, which is the name it still has today, although people often just call it Applebee's.
The company was acquired by IHOP in 2007, making the combined business the world's largest full service restaurant company with over 3,200 locations worldwide when combining the two.
Do you remember Applebee's iconic Wanda Sykes commercials?
Applebee's had one of the biggest television ad hits on their hand with a character called the Applebee's Apple, a mascot invented to represent the chain. The character was voiced by comedian Wanda Sykes, who brought her signature outrageous style to the character.
The apple would appear in ads that showed off the latest Applebee's specials, and then it would say one of two slogans: "Get it together, baby!" or "Together is good."
Though the campaign was a hit, they introduced a new slogan in 2008, which was "It's a whole new neighborhood", and it used both the old and new logos for Applebee's. The next year, the slogan was modified to "There's no place like the neighborhood."
2012 brought yet another new ad featuring actor Jason Sudeikis and a new slogan - "See you tomorrow". These ads focused on Applebee's new dishes that use fresh ingredients.
